 The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

What is the RHI?

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme is a government funded program which pays people to run renewable energy heating systems.

The payments are assessed according to the heat supplied to the given premises, and are index-linked and guaranteed for 20 years.

The Scheme is split into two parts, which have different criteria and starting dates:

Scheme

Applies to

Status

DOMESTIC

Domestic homes only.

Active from Summer 2013
(start date to be confirmed)

COMMERCIAL

Any business premises / processes requiring heat*, as well as district heating schemes supplying more than one registered council tax payer.

Already active

*Many commercial operations and processes will qualify for RHI payments.  Examples include heating business premises; Grain drying; drying wood fuel; kiln drying timber; etc.

In order to qualify for the RHI payments, boilers under 45kw must be registered under the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) and installed by an MCS accredited installer.

Boilers over 45kw are outside the MCS accreditation scheme, but must be EN303-5 certified (or equivalent) to qualify.

All boiler systems we supply are currently eligible for the Phase 1 RHI payments.

How are RHI payments calculated?

There are 3 tariff structures to the RHI payments, based on boiler size:

Highest Payments

For boilers with a max. rated output of 200kw or under

Middle payments

For boilers with a 200-1000kw rating

Lowest payments

For boilers with a rating over 1000kw

Within each tariff group, there is also a 2-tier payment structure:

                    Tier 1 is calculated as:
Boiler rating (kw) x 1314 (15% of the hours in a year) x tariff (at the time of writing this stood at 8.3p per k/w)

Once the allotted 1314 hours have been recorded on the heat meter, Tier 2 payments are applied to any extra heat generated (at the time of writing these stood at 2.1p per k/w).

For example, if you had a boiler rated at max. 190kw, the payments would be calculated as follows:

                    Tier 1: 190 x 1314 x 8.3 = £20,721.78

The Tier 2 payment is also potentially quite valuable.  For instance, if a boiler takes 30% of the hours in a year to reach the tier 1 limit and operates at 50% of its rated output for the remainder of the year, the Tier 2 payment would be worth over £12,000.

Please note that a qualifying boiler system must be installed before an RHI application can be made.
